[臺灣正名]

Dear Taiwanese American New Yorker Friends,
It seems to me that we've been fighting for "Taiwan" name correction "臺灣正名" for at least a decade, but we are still treading water at the same spot. In fact, since we lost the election to KMT a year ago, fatugue has settled in. Taiwanese Americans have slowed down treading water. I think we are sinking.
I'm a librarian. I catalog books day-in day-out. I used to write to the American publishers to complain about their wrongly colored maps of East Asia in which Taiwan always showed the same color as China. What the publisher could do at best to correct their wrong was to show mono color on all nations in East Asia for their next editions if their maps were to show, for instance, weather or mountains and seas which have nothing to do with the boundaries of nations. If showing boundaries of nations, they do still follow ISO, otherwise the punishment from China would be severe. Here's a true story:
My son-in-law's step father was the founder of The Lonely Planet Travel Guide in Europe. Last year was the Olympic Year. When their books did not show Taiwan as part of China on their maps, Beijing government did not allow them to sell their travel books. The Chinese government forced the publisher to dump their initial 5000 copies. The publisher had to reprint the same thing just to add Taiwan as a part of China. This action was to inconvenience all travelers who had inter est to visit Taiwan before or after the Olympics to find out they did not have different visa and different airline flights to do so. I mean they were caught unprepared. The travelers would have prepared if they had known ahead that Taiwan is an independent country totally from China.
So yes, the root of it is ISO, but really fundamentally it is because Taiwan is not a member of UN.
What can we do in our hopelessness? Well, FYI, our Congress has not forsaken people of Taiwan. We just had 30 years commemoration of Taiwan Relation Acts. In America, the government is on its knees when People Speak.
Best regards, Connie Forest Hills, Queens
