巴恩斯續指，52歲的死者鄭醫師英勇地衝向大衛周並試圖解除他的武裝，讓其他人得以進行干預。在該教會服務20年的張宣信牧師（Billy Chang）用椅子擊中大衛周的頭部後，其他教友們用電線將他綁住。根據監獄紀錄，大衛周以100萬美元的保釋金被羈押，目前尚不清楚是否有律師替他辯護。
自由時報報導引述壓制歹徒的牧師張宣信事後傳訊息說：「我是當事者，是我拿椅子制服（伏）槍擊的兇手，現在還留在現場接受警方與FBI的調查，我們都平安，但一位年輕人受害，五位兄姐送醫治療，沒有生命危險，請為我們代禱，代向南門教會的兄姐報平安！」
加州約巴林達（Yorba Linda）台裔市議員黃瑞雅（Peggy Huang）受訪時透露，家中雙親也是該教會的教友，不過在過去兩年剛好碰上武漢肺炎疫情，兩老決定待在台灣，才逃過這一劫，保住性命，黃瑞雅強調：「他們被困在台灣是一件幸運的事，因為他們本來會在那兒。」 |
