Although it has been well delayed since 1945, Taiwanese finally loudly and publicly announced what they want the future of Taiwan. On April 7, the Formosa Alliancewas officially established. The FTV Talk show host Dennis Peng (彭文正) successfully facilitated the meeting with multi-languages, he appropriately introduced every panelist highlighted their contribution to the community and smoothly run at one go to the end.
Inthe opening ceremony, former President Lee Teng-hui (李登輝) said “More than 75% of population in Taiwan identified themselves as Taiwanese, sonow is time for all Taiwanese to abandon their prejudices and push for Taiwan’s participation in the international community by rectifying our national name and constituting a new Taiwan Constitution.”
Former president Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) spoke to the audience in a prerecorded video, he said “Taiwan must become a new and independent nation; Taiwan must enter the UN. As long as I can breathe I will assure you even by scarifying the limitation of my freedom for the unlimited freedom of Taiwan.”
The Formosa Alliance founder and Formosa TV (FTV) chairman Kuo Pei-hung (郭倍宏) said “Chinese president Xi Jinping (習近平) claimed he would not allow any separation of any inch of Chinese territory a while ago, fortunately Taiwan has not been a part of PRC’s territory. Let’s build our Taiwan nation and join UN to totally cut of the relation with China.”
Late democracy activist Deng Nan-jung’s (鄭南榕) daughter, Deng Chu-mei (鄭竹梅) said “My late father said the barrier of a nation facing only can be removed by its own people. The future of a nation should be decided by their people. If we don’t decide our own future it will be decided by others. If we don’t make our own choice it will be chosen by others. We must clearly inform China that we don’t want to be unified neither having two systems in one country. Don’t take it for granted that choice will be given by god we must fight by ourselves for the opportunity.
Former presidential advisers Peng Ming-min (彭明敏) said “It was wrong that Taiwanese have never been their own master in the past hundreds years. We are entitled to self-determine our own future. It is a mission of our generation to build a Taiwan nation for our future generation.”
Former presidential advisers Wu Li-pei (吳澧培) said “I was speechless when I was questioned who are you, do you represent Taiwan people? Now, I am excited the launch of Formosa Alliance. Some people worry it might make China angry and attack Taiwan. Please don’t forget China has never given up any chance to attack Taiwan in the past decades, they simply just won’t be able to do it. So, don’t be afraid of China’s BS. To build a Taiwan nation is our business, it is not China’s business.”
Former premiers Chang Chun-hsiung (張俊雄) said “Both US President Donald Trump and Japan Premier Shinzo Abe delivered messages to encourage Taiwan people after the Hualien earthquake. Taiwan needs to enhance the relation with allies in international community. Let’s work closely with chairman Kuo to rectify name and join UN.”
Former premiers Yu Shyi-kun (游錫堃) said “Has DPP fulfilled its commitment to normalize Taiwan nation? I am afraid not. There are so many different approaches of Taiwan sovereignty, but everyone agrees to independence referendum and rectify name to join UN. The US has been clearly to support Taiwan recently. It is a perfect timing for Taiwan to build as a nation. We must get ourselves ready so we can grape the opportunity whenever it comes.”
New Power Party Executive Chairman Huang Kuo-chang (黃國昌) said “Twenty night years ago, Deng Nan-jung sacrificed his life not just for the freedom of speech but for a normal country. To build a normal country of Taiwan is not a single mission of any individual Taiwanese, but our collective mission. Now we have so many supporters from all over around the world, I strongly believe we can achieve the mission to build a normal country in our generation. Let’s join hand to work on it.”
Taiwan Solidarity Union Chairman Lau Yi-te(劉一德) said “The green team won a landslide victory in 2016 election. But, President Tsai Ing-wen’s (蔡英文) comment on the Permanent Court of Arbitration ruled that China has no historical rights in the South China Sea echoed to Chinese president Xi Jinping disappointed us. I believe goodwill criticism is the best bargain power for her to deal with China and the blue team in Taiwan. So, don’t get me wrong, the Formosa Alliance is happy to play as the black face and push Tsai to fight hard against China.”
Social Democratic Party spokesman Miao Po-ya (苗博雅) said “With your support that Taiwan has moved one step forward every day. Now, everyone in Taiwan enjoys the freedom of speech, but I don’t think that’s all we want. In the past four hundred years we have dreamed to be our own master. I believe that is Deng’s dream too. Referendum is the best tool to prepare ourselves to be our own master. Let’s join hands to work on it.”
Taiwan Jijing Party chairman Chen Yi-chi (陳奕齊) said “This is a historical moment for all Taiwanese because we all involve building our own nation. If you thought Taiwan has been an independent country already, then the launch of Formosa Alliance is a movement to defend the nation. If you don’t think Taiwan is an independent country, then this is a movement to establish a nation. For so many years Taiwan’s voice has not been heard in the international community. I believe with the launch of Formosa Alliance that our Taiwanese voices have been heard this time.”
Taiwan University student Chow Wei-li (周維理) said “I joined the 318 Sun Flower Movement, then started to care about Taiwan national subjectivity movement. Under Dutch government we were Dutch, Qing dynasty we were Qing, KMT regime we wereChinese, now under DPP government who are we? Without self-determination we will be continuously recognized as Chinese. In the past four hundred years we always acted as someone else and forgot who we are how to act as our real selves. So, self-determination and referendum are a must step to identify ourselves.”
Taiwan University student Chang Wen-chao (張閔喬) said “Deng said if I don’t build Taiwan Nation, then Taiwan won’t be able truly democratized. ROC is the real obstacle of Taiwan’s democratization. The native grassroots party has degenerated from self-determination into maintaining status quo. We insist the domestically democratized but without any identity recognized in international community should go into history and this will be the only way out for Taiwan. China is step by step on going to unify Taiwan now not in the future. The independent youths are ready to fight against China, both PRC and ROC. We are not afraid of ROC government’s crackdown on persecution. Let’s sweep the illusionary nation ROC hanging in Taiwan over seventy years into history and build a real new nation that belongs to all of us.”
The launch of Formosa Alliance is a great historical event of Taiwan but it was almost boycott by all media except FTV. All the panel speakers have done a great job, they clearly pointed out the real problems Taiwan facing today, but we don’t see any detail report from any media in Taiwan. What a shame! Taiwan history will examine those who supported it and those sang a different tune.
Self-determination to build a new nation Taiwan, not ROC there is no need to rectify national name or name change. It will be a brand new member to enter UN. Of course there is still a long way for Taiwan to transform from a military occupied land into a sovereign state and join in UN. But, a self-determination referendum is the first step must go. Let’s learn from history, the US Congress passed Platt Amendment then Cuba became independent, passed Tydings Mcduffie Act then Philippine independent. Now, the US has continuously passed TRA and TTA to support Taiwan, but Taiwan goes nowhere if it is still under ROC.
