SUPPORT CONGRESSMAN BRAD SHERMAN! A TRUE FRIEND OF TAIWAN!
When Taiwanese Americans hosted a welcome dinner for Taiwan’s democratically elected President Tsai Ing-wen in Los Angeles in 2016, Rep. Brad Sherman (D-CA) was one of the honored guests. During his remarks, he told President Tsai that she should be invited to come to Capitol Hill to address a joint session of Congress.
On the very same day that president Tsai Ing-wen stopped over in San Francisco on her way home from South America, January 13, 2017, Brad Sherman, together with Rep. Steve Chabot (R-OH) and chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee Rep. Ed Royce (R-CA) introduced the “Taiwan Travel Act."
The binding Taiwan Travel Act legislation declares that “the United States Government should encourage visits between the United States and Taiwan at all levels.” The bill unanimously passed the House and the Senate and was signed into law by the president on March 16, 2018.
In light of enactment into law of the Taiwan Travel Act, the Congressman again brought up the issue of inviting Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen to a joint session of Congress during an Asian Subcommittee hearing on April 17, 2018. More action on this in the pipeline!
When Sherman met with Ma Ying-jeou in Taipei in 2014 as part of a Congressional delegation, Sherman questioned Ma about the incarceration of Chen Shui-bian and called upon Ma to release president Chen – a topic the rest of the delegation had not wanted to bring up out of fear of “offending” Ma Ying-jeou.
Currently in his seventh term as a Member of the House of Representatives representing the 27thdistrict of California, Rep. Brad Sherman, from Sherman Oaks (or as he always says: “The best-named district in the United States”), has been a Taiwan supporter from day one.
When he joined Congress in 1997, he immediately became a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. In that capacity, he has supported and co-sponsored multiple Taiwan resolutions that were introduced by Members of Congress from both sides of the aisle.
In his legislative activities, Rep. Sherman has proven to be especially concerned about the lack of Taiwan’s participation in international organizations such as the UN and the WHO, and about the lack of hi-level contacts between the United States and Taiwan. He has co-sponsored WHO and hi-level Taiwan legislation.
Also, on December 2, 2015, Congressman Sherman and Congressman Ed Royce introduced the Taiwan Naval Support Act, legislation that would force the Administration to comply with existing law and send authorized naval defense articles to Taiwan. The bill came after the Administration has delayed sending two frigates from the United States to Taiwan for nearly two years. On June 29, 2017, the US approved a major $1.4 billion arms package for Taiwan.
In 2016 he cosponsored a resolution “reaffirming the Taiwan Relations Act and the Six Assurances as cornerstones of United States-Taiwan relations.” The resolution unanimously passed both the House and the Senate.
The Congressman attended all Capitol Hill receptions FAPA hosted for Taiwanese dignitaries over the years, such as former President Lee Teng-hui, then-presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen, Su Tseng-chang, Frank Hsieh, Yu Shih-Kun etc..
In case the Democrats take over control of the House at the end of this year, Sherman is due to become the Asian Subcommittee chairman.
We need more friends in Congress that support Taiwan like Congressman Sherman!
