Tan Taiwan
The Path of Happiness, and Who Walks With You Poem by Tan Taiwan
The path of happiness— I only understood later— is not where it leads, but who walks beside you.
Some roads are not long, yet, somewhere along the way, you grow tired.
Not because of distance, but because the one beside you never lets you fully rest.
A sentence, rewritten in silence; a step, checked again and again. Over time, what you begin to doubt is not only the direction, but yourself.
You thought— you were simply not enough.
So you tried harder, walked with more force, dared not stop.
Until one day, you grew quiet.
Not at peace— only tired.
And slowly you understood—
people do not always fall on the road. More often, they fall beside the wrong person.
They are not necessarily unkind. But with them, you are always explaining, always proving.
And the right person— is quiet.
Your silence is understood. Your weariness is allowed.
You can sit down, do nothing at all, and no longer feel that something is missing.
In that moment, you realize—
to be held is not because of what you have done, but because you are who you are.
Perhaps that is how happiness begins.
Not in the absence of storms, but in having someone beside you to hold the umbrella— or to stand with you in the rain.
But if you walk a little farther, you will see—
people leave.
Some stop. Some turn away. Some, without a word, fade from your side.
And you panic, wondering if you have lost your way again.
But as you go on, you begin to understand—
what remains is not a person, but something else.
Something that lets you be true, something that keeps you gentle, something that allows you, even in solitude, to stand quietly.
It has no name, yet it stays.
When you doubt, when you fall, when no one answers— it stays.
And then you know—
the path of happiness is not about finding someone who never leaves.
It is about walking a road where even alone, you do not lose yourself.
You still choose to believe, to remain tender, to keep living with care.
That is enough.
The road will change. Night will come. People will part.
But you are no longer afraid.
Because something already lives within you.
So when you meet someone again— you no longer rush to hold on, nor fear letting go.
You simply ask, quietly:
Are we on the same path?
If we are, we walk together for a while.
If not, we let it pass.
Because you have learned— how to walk alone, slowly, without losing the light. |
